This summer thanks to some connections(my sister) I was able to find a job. I needed the extra help because everywhere I went I either was never contacted again or rejected. I can finally understand and relate when people say how hard it is to get hired. Well it might have had something to do with the fact that I'm so young (16) and had no prior experience but... Oh well.
My sister was friends with the manager of the store. I had already applied but I hadn't heard back yet. So my sister stopped by the store to do a little shopping and talk a bit with her friend. The manager had commented how they needed a sales girl ASAP by the next day (apparently a girl was pregnant or on vacation... I'm not sure), upon hearing this my sister naturally thought of my struggle with job hunting and mentioned me. One thing lead to another and I was working the next day.
The store that I was and still am working at is an accessories/shoes boutique. (Well I call it a boutique because it sounds nicer) I had been shopping at the store for years already since my sister had worked at one of the locations and I of course loved her discount. It is very affordable and has good quality merchandise, at least most things.
When I arrived my first day one of the girls tat had been working a while trained me. She showed me how the stock rooms were organized how to do basic tasks on the computer. It took a total of 15 minutes, I think. At that store, only girls with a certain amount of time working there become cashiers so I didn't have to worry about that just yet. So after she told me everything I should now I started selling. At the store the sales girls are not allowed to sit. My feet were not accustomed to standing for hours on end. Lets just say that first day, my feet were dying. It's gotten easier as I go along.
I think I have been a good worker my first week their I got the coveted position of top seller. I was happy to get the title but getting it also reminded me that there will always be competition between workers even if it is friendly
Things to Remember
- be polite and most of the time people will be polite back
- if the manager directly gives you a task do it no questions asked or complaints
- pace yourself, overwork yourself
- don't take advantage of the freedom given to you
Oh and try your best, it will show
